JP Sercel Associates (JPSA) of Manchester, N.H., a maker of laser systems for wafer processing and micromachining, announced the appointment of Cristian Porneala, PhD, as an applications Porneala.jpgengineer. Porneala will work in the company's applications lab and is responsible for the parameterization, setup and operation of excimer and solid-state laser systems. He has a background in laser applications and laser-material interaction, and is also knowledgeable in the areas of heat transfer, material science, and laser-assisted manufacturing and optics, JPSA said. Porneala's research has focused on thermal and fluid flow phenomena involved in short-pulse laser microprocessing. He has authored several journal and conference papers related to phase explosion and dielectric transition during nanosecond laser ablation of metals. He was also involved in several research projects and developed a time-resolved microphotography station with nanosecond resolution to study the laser-induced vapor expansion and test micromachining of thin metallic films.

Glossary
dielectric
Exhibiting the characteristic of materials that are electrical insulators or in which an electric field can be sustained with a minimum dispersion of power. They exhibit nonlinear properties, such as anisotropy of conductivity or polarization, or saturation phenomena.
laser ablation
Laser ablation is a process that involves the removal or erosion of material from a target surface using laser energy. This technique is widely used in various scientific, industrial, and medical applications. The intense energy from the laser beam interacts with the material, causing it to undergo physical and chemical changes, ultimately leading to its removal. Key features of laser ablation include: Laser energy: A high-energy laser beam is directed onto the surface of a material. The...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
