Carl Zeiss SMT Inc., a provider of electron- and ion-beam imaging and analysis equipment and services, recently moved its North American headquarters from Thornwood, N.Y., to Peabody, Mass., near Boston, as part of its integration of Alis Corp., a startup developer of helium ion microscopy it acquired in 2006. (See Alis Acquired by Carl Zeiss SMT). The new 53,000-sq-ft facility houses a 14,000-sq-ft development and manufacturing plant and an application development and system demonstration laboratory with Evo and Ultra scanning electron microscopes, NVision 3D CrossBeam workstations, Libra energy-filter transmission electron microscopes and the Orion helium ion microscope. Customers are welcome to bring samples for evaluation of the equipment, the company said. About 20 employees will be located at the facility. Carl Zeiss SMT AG is a subsidiary of Carl Zeiss AG.

An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
