Luxtera Forms OIDA Silicon Photonics Alliance

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email Comments
Luxtera Inc. said today it is forming a silicon photonics alliance within the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA). Members of the new alliance, or "community of interest," will participate in forums, identify key applications areas and promote silicon photonics within optical standards groups to assure interoperability among vendors. Luxtera engineer Tom Palkert will head the group. Companies that have already joined the alliance include Corning, Kotura, Molex and US Conec. It will officially launch in conjunction with OIDA's "Perspectives on the Optoelectronics Industry: Advances, Challenges and Growth Opportunities" forum, being held this week in San Jose, Calif. Luxtera introduced Blazar, a 40-Gb optical active cable that combines optical modules and copper cables to deliver high-bandwidth interconnect using CMOS photonics technology, the silicon technology used to make microprocessors. For more information about the alliance, contact David Iams, OIDA communications director, at (phone: 202-785-4426), or visit:

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
