APOPKA, Fla., Sept. 24, 2007 -- Northrop Grumman Corp. has been awarded a contract potentially valued at more than $98 million for the procurement of nearly 940 special operations forces laser acquisition marker, laser rangefinder designators (SOFLAM SOFLRD), and related data and provisioning items.

Naval Surface Warfare Center of Crane, Ind., is contracting activity for the five-year, firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract. The work will be performed in Apopka, Fla.

The SOFLAM SOFLRD is a lightweight integrated laser designator and rangefinder that enables special operations forces personnel to locate and designate critical enemy targets for destruction using laser-guided ordnance. The system is capable of remote firing and is used with mounting accessories such as pointers and night sights.

"The SOFLAM SOFLRD is a very specialized piece of equipment built specifically for our special forces," said Gregory Williams, general manager of the company's Laser Systems business unit. "It is a target designator and marker that can be easily carried by one person. It can be operated remotely -- an important attribute when our forces are operating covertly. The SOFLAM SOFLRD will give our special forces the capability to remain undetected while they put highly accurate, precision-guided munitions exactly on target."
