A Webcast on industrial laser safety, for which the Laser Institute of America provided educational content, was hosted by Industrial Laser Solutions at its Web site in July. Sponsored by Kentek Corp. and Fumex Inc., both corporate members of the institute, the one-hour broadcast will be available on demand at the host Web site for one year. Gus Anibarro, education manager at the institute, was the instructor for the course, which is targeted to industrial laser users. Topics included laser accidents, beam and nonbeam hazards, and control measures. The information is based on the ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers standard.

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
