Kopin Demos Even Smaller SVGA Display

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2008 -- Kopin Corp. of Taunton, Mass., said today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas that it has developed the smallest color SVGA display (800 x 600 resolution) in the LCD industry, targeted for PC and HD-related video eyewear applications.

The 0.44-in. (diagonal) CyberDisplay SVGA is the same size as its CyberDisplay VGA display (640 x 480 resolution), enabling it to use the same optics and housing developed for the VGA display. Kopin said the SVGA display is the result of its effort to shrink the full-color pixel size to 11.25-um sq.

President and CEO John C. C. Fan said in a statement, "Compared with our commercially available SVGA display with 0.59-inch diagonal and consuming ~100 mW, the new SVGA display has a 45-percent smaller area and consumes 30-percent less power. We have now shrunk the pixels by more than 1000 times, compared to those used in current LCD TVs. Conventional LCD TVs and laptop screens can now be reduced to fingernail sizes, which could open major applications for displaying high-resolution images in mobile portable devices."

Kopin combined smaller pixel transistors and the planar multimetal layer process offered by 8-in. silicon integrated circuit processing with a nanotechnology process for its liquid crystal alignment and a precision cell-gap liquid crystal assembly process.

Kopin's CyberDisplays are transmissive LCD displays with the same architecture as LCD flat panel TVs but with ultrahigh-pixel densities.

Kopin is demonstrating the CyberDisplay SVGA LVS microdisplay in a private showing at CES, and Kopin said samples will be available to select customers for evaluation and design-in purposes.

microdisplay
A microdisplay is a miniature electronic display technology that is designed to project visual information onto a small screen. Unlike traditional displays, microdisplays are typically very compact and often used in applications where size, weight, and power consumption are critical factors. These displays can be based on various technologies, including liquid crystal display (LCD), organic light-emitting diode (OLED), digital light processing (DLP), and others. Key characteristics and...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
