Applied Materials Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., said its new Bright Future card game was designed for teaching sustainability and environmental concepts to children ages 9 and up. The game was developed in conjunction with two teachers as part of the Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education program and is currently being evaluated in 25 public and private schools in California, Texas and Oregon, the company said. “The game can easily be incorporated in science, language arts, math, social studies or arts programs, and is a great tool for guiding class discussions and writing assignments,” said Heather Wong, co-creator of the game and fifth grade teacher at Lawton Alternative School in San Francisco. Applied Materials said it intends to make the card game and a teacher's guide available at no charge to interested teachers for the 2008-09 school year. Qualified educators interested in ordering the game for their classrooms can visit: http://brightfuture.appliedmaterials.com/game/. Applied Materials makes equipment, service and software products used to fabricate semiconductor chips, flat panel displays, solar photovoltaic cells, flexible electronics and energy efficient glass.

Glossary
electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
