The Photonics Society of Poland (PSP) will hold its inaugural symposium May 31 at Warsaw University of Technology, said its president, Tomasz R. Wolinski, a member of the university's physics faculty. PSP, which evolved from the SPIE Poland Chapter, has 215 members and said it is coordinating activies with the Polish Academy of Sciences electronics and telecommunications committee (Wolinski chairs its optoelectronics section) and the Society of Polish Electrical Engineers' optoelectronics committee. SPIE'd regional chapters have been facilitating a transition to form locally based groups that maintain close connections with the society SPIE said. Malgorzata Kujawinska, a professor at the Warsaw University of Technology, was SPIE's president in 2005. PSP board members include Leszek R. Jaroszewicz, Military University of Technology, Warsaw (vice president, membership and industry); Andrzej Domanski, Warsaw University of Technology (treasurer); Anna Cysewska-Sobusiak, Technical University of Poznan (secretary); Zbigniew Jaroszewicz, Institute of Applied Optics, Warsaw (conference coordinator); Bogdan Kosmowski, Technical University of Gdansk (regional liaison for north Poland); Aneta Michalkiewicz, Warsaw University of Technology (student chapters coordinator); Tadeusz Pustelny, Silesian University of Technology (regional liaison for south Poland); Ryszard Romaniuk, Warsaw University of Technology ("Photonics Letters" editor-in-chief); and Waclaw Urbanczyk, Technical University of Wroclaw ("Optica Applicata" editor-in-chief). Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
