In California, Invitrogen Corp. of Carlsbad and Applera Corp. of Foster City have agreed to a merger. The former company will acquire all outstanding shares of the latter’s Applied Biosystems Group in a transaction valued at $6.7 billion in cash and stock. Combining the companies will increase Invitrogen’s consumables business.
