LEDs Back in Business, But Did They Ever Go Away?

Jul. 14, 2009 — I was delighted to recently read the latest report from LEDInside, Taiwan, which suggested that the listed LED manufacturers in Taiwan had recorded total revenue of NT$565.2 billion, a 9.5 percent growth compared to NT$516 billion in May (+4.7 percent year-over-year). Considering the past experience, the demand for the hot season is likely to extend through September and October.

LED chip makers’ total revenue amounted to NT$2.453 billion, up by 13.9 percent month-over-month (MoM) in June; and LED packagers posted NT$3.198 billion in revenue, a 6.4 percent growth MoM.

Closer to home, I was considerably delighted by the interest being shown in LEDs by some of the Indian companies, in particular, OnLeo Global Solutions, from Bangalore. After a meeting, which was set up by my associate, Usha Prasad, with Ashok Gowda, CEO, OnLeo, it was evident that this company clearly intends to go after the LED market in a major way. OnLeo wanted to source LEDs, and having worked extensively in China, I was in a position to offer leads.

According to OnLeo, it is developing intelligent LED street lights (remote power on/off, dimming, GSM connectivity, short range communication, etc.) from the range of 36 W to 200 W. It is currently developing the electronics for the intelligence part.

All of this led to setting up meetings with companies such as Shenzhen CGD Lighting Industrial Co. Ltd. from China, among others. According to this company, it provides two kinds of LED sources -- Edison and Cree. Generally, Shenzhen CGD Lighting provides technical parameter of Edison, while those of Cree are available on request.

The company also provides designs of LED power – as 1×1 W, 1×3 W, 3×1 W, 3×3 W. Buyers can check the brightness density, if required. The lens angle would probably need to be tailored.

Attention would also need to be paid to the color temperature – warm white or pure white. Usually, Shenzhen CGD provides 3000 K and 6000 K as choices, which can be tailored to suit buyers needs.

This is an example of just one company! There are several other companies in China providing a variety of LEDs and LED-based solutions. Buyers are advised to visit Hong Kong and attend two shows – the Hong Kong Electronics Show and the China Sourcing Fair. Both shows have spring and fall versions, so that should not be a problem, I guess.

So, despite all these talks we hear about the economic downturn, LEDs were never really out of business! Why, even iSuppli recently indicated that LEDs was one sector doing very well. It has been used more in Japan – over 30 percent. The biggest influencers for LEDs in Japan are Canon and Sony.
