SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 12, 2009 – New research in optical science and engineering will be presented at Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2009/Laser Science (LS) XXV, to take place Oct. 11-15 in San Jose. FiO 2009 – the Optical Society of America's 93rd annual meeting – and the American Physical Society's LS XXV brings communities together for five days of new research in optical science and engineering. LS XXV is the 25th annual meeting of APS’s Division of Laser Science (DLS), a forum for presenting the latest work on laser applications and development, spanning a range of topics in physics, biology and chemistry.

The 2009 technical program will feature six special symposia, two plenary talks, more than 200 invited speakers, six short courses, tutorials, an awards ceremony and an exhibition of more than 100 companies, as well as provide valuable networking opportunities.

Eleven papers will be presented under the Future of 3-D Display: The Marketplace and the Technology topic. With 3-D displays becoming critical for many applications, including medical and scientific visualization, flight simulation and training, engineering design and entertainment, the symposium aims to bring together researchers who are involved in 3-D technologies, a range of applications and research vis-à-vis human factor.

The Gravitational Wave Interferometry from Earth and Space symposium will present six papers covering the emerging field of gravitational wave astronomy, emphasizing the central role lasers and optical technologies play in the operation of gravitational wave detectors.

The Optics for Imaging at the Nanoscale and Beyond symposium will offer 12 technical papers to highlight the latest optical methods for nanoscale imaging across a broad spectral range. Six presentations will be given at the special symposia on Phase Space Optics –Optical System Theory for the 21st Century. The talks are aimed at promoting phase space optics, including optical system theory in terms of the Wigner distribution function and related joint signal transformations.

The special symposium portion of the event will also include a Laser Science Symposium on Undergraduate Research, as well as a symposium titled, OSA Topical Meeting Highlights.

FiO/LS 2009 is collocated with the Fall OSA Optics & Photonics Congress. The topical meetings are: Advances in Optical Materials (AIOM), Adaptive Optics: Methods, Analysis and Applications (AO), Computational Optical Sensing and Imaging (COSI), Femtosecond Laser Microfabrication (LM) and Signal Recovery and Synthesis (SRS).

The event is co-sponsored by OSA and APS.

Glossary
astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
