mysterybox.jpgCO2 and fiber laser systems maker Epilog Laser of Golden, Colo., today announced that Maarten Vanderstoel of Fort Worth, Texas, has won the Epilog Laser/GeekDad.com Mystery Box Challenge for his handmade puzzle box featuring light and sound effects. “Maarten’s entry really encompassed the theme of the Mystery Box Challenge,” said Mike Dean, director of sales and marketing for Epilog. “The entry was creative, unique and engaging on so many levels.” Vanderstoel, who runs a children’s art studio called Van Grow, said a big reason he entered the contest was to encourage creativity and the love of mystery in others. “The top of the box is a puzzle to be figured out. I made the springloaded buttons by cutting dowels and attaching a spring, and everything was soldered to a breadboard attached to one nine-volt battery,” he said. Vanderstoel will receive a laser-engraved iPod Touch as his prize. (To view Vanderstoel’s entry and others, click here.)
