Energy Grant

Photonics Spectra
Oct 2009
In Berkeley, Calif., the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has been granted $40.3 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This grant is in addition to the $115.8 million the laboratory received in March from the US Department of Energy Office of Science. The new funds will go to five projects at the laboratory, including equipment improvements to the Advanced Light Source, which will total $11.3 million.

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
