AACHEN-HERZOGENRATH, Germany, Feb. 2, 2010 – Germany-based Aixtron AG, a provider of deposition equipment to the semiconductor industry, announced it will build a state-of-the-art research and development campus in Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid.

The facility, which will accommodate up to 350 engineers at the end of Phase 1, will significantly increase the laboratory's resources and prototype capabilities for developing next-generation complex materials deposition manufacturing systems, the company said. Over the next two to three years, Aixtron plans to invest up to €40 million in the R&D complex. The renewable energy design of the campus will minimize its carbon footprint.

Aixtron's principal manufacturing site for standard deposition equipment will remain nearby in Herzogenrath, Kaiserstrasse, supported by its engineering and assembly locations in Cambridge, UK, and Sunnyvale, Calif.

“This is a vitally important next step in the implementation of our product development strategy, and the accelerated timing reflects the recent increase in volume and momentum we have seen in the markets we serve," said Aixtron CEO Paul Hyland, adding that the new facility will allow the company to improve performance and reduce costs of ownership in the emerging LED general lighting market.
