Researchers at Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland selected Avo Photonics Inc. of Horsham, Pa., to build an imaging catheter for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. The device will enable surgeons to monitor treatment and to visualize intracardiac structures during radiofrequency catheter ablation. The company, which was awarded a Phase 1 design contract in September 2008 and a subsequent contract in October 2008 to develop prototype optomechanical systems, has delivered eight forward imaging catheters to the university. The research could lead to imaging techniques that improve the insertion and accuracy of radio-frequency catheters.
