Columbia, Md.-based Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has partnered with Cerno Bioscience of Danbury, Conn., which applies mathematical techniques to mass spectrometry. The companies will team Shimadzu’s liquid chromatography mass spectrometry quadrupole systems with Cerno’s MassWorks software to enhance data calibration. In conjunction with Shimadzu’s LCMSsolution software, the package uses Cerno’s patented MSIntegrity technology to improve mass determination by up to 100 times on unit mass resolution mass spectrometers. The proprietary software will permit researchers to perform compound identification through elemental composition prediction – a capability usually available only on high-resolution systems.

Glossary
mass spectrometry
An instrumental technique that utilizes the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles as recorded from a mass spectrometer in order to determine the mass of a particle as well as the chemical makeup, or elemental ionic composition of a given sample or molecule.
spectrometry
