JENA, Germany, May 11, 2010 — Jenoptik AG announced that the laser technology division of Jenoptik Laser, Optik, Systems GmbH and Jenoptik Laserdiode GmbH have merged to form Jenoptik Laser GmbH, while the Optics, Microoptics and Digital Imaging business units of Jenoptik Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH will now operate under the business name Jenoptik Optical Systems GmbH.

Effective on May 3, 2010, the spin-off of the laser technology business unit and the merger of Jenoptik Laserdiode GmbH into Jenoptik Laser GmbH became effective with the entry into the Commercial Register of the Local Court.

All assets of the business unit and of Jenoptik Laserdiode GmbH were transferred to Jenoptik Laser GmbH in accordance with the German Reorganization of Companies Act. The new company will fulfill all rights and obligations from existing contracts, proposals and orders without any disadvantages on the part of its customers and suppliers.

With a focus on laser sources, the newly formed laser company covers OEM, diode and solid-state lasers, and epitaxial layer structuring of wafers.

The laser technology business unit spin-off will shift its efforts to developing, manufacturing and selling systems and components for optical and optoelectronic applications. To reflect the focused approach, the company’s name has changed to Jenoptik Optical Systems GmbH.

With its three business units—Optics, Microoptics and Digital Imaging—the company will continue to act as the lead company of the Optical Systems division within the Jenoptik Group structure.

Glossary
epitaxial
Epitaxial refers to the growth of a crystalline layer on a crystalline substrate in such a way that the orientation of the crystal lattice of the growing layer is related to that of the substrate. In other words, epitaxial growth involves the deposition of a thin film or layer of material onto a crystalline substrate in a way that maintains a well-defined relationship between the atomic arrangement of the layer and the substrate. Epitaxial growth is commonly used in the manufacturing of...
solid-state laser
A solid-state laser is a type of laser that uses a solid gain medium (as opposed to a liquid or gas) to produce coherent light. The term "solid-state" refers to the fact that the active medium, where the lasing action occurs, is a solid material. This material is typically a crystalline or glass-like substance doped with specific ions or atoms that can undergo stimulated emission to generate laser light. The basic components of a solid-state laser include: Gain medium: This is the solid...
