The Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) SA will spearhead the Plasmonic Innovative Sensing in the Infrared project, which has been awarded a €2.8 million grant from the European Union. The grant will run for three years. The project, begun Jan. 1, 2010, will create ultrasensitive chemical sensors and smarter, cheaper IR photodetectors for the marketplace. CSEM will coordinate and facilitate the technology transfer between academic partners and small and medium enterprises.

Glossary
infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
photodetector
A photodetector, also known as a photosensor or photodiode, is a device that detects and converts light into an electrical signal. Photodetectors are widely used in various applications, ranging from simple light sensing to more complex tasks such as imaging and communication. Key features and principles of photodetectors include: Light sensing: The primary function of a photodetector is to sense or detect light. When photons (particles of light) strike the active area of the photodetector,...
