Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., announced that it has shipped more than 1000 of its Paladin series quasi-CW, high-power ultraviolet lasers. Available with a choice of 2, 4, 8, 10 or 16 W of output power at a wavelength of 355 nm, they are suitable for printed circuit board, semiconductor, solar cell and flat panel display applications. The company provides laser-based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets.

quasi-cw laser
A laser that generates a succession of pulses at a high enough repetition rate to appear continuous. The pump source is switched on for short intervals, nominally equal to the lifetime of the population inversion of the gain medium, during the continuous operation of the laser. This results in a lower duty cycle which reduces heating and achieves higher output powers.
solar cell
A device for converting sunlight into electrical energy, consisting of a sandwich of P-type and N-type semiconducting wafers. A photon with sufficient energy striking the cell can dislodge an electron from an atom near the interface of the two crystal types. Electrons released in this way, collected at an electrode, can constitute an electrical current.
