IRphotonics of Hamden, Conn., an infrared-based materials and systems manufacturer, announced that its iCure spot curing system has completed qualification and production acceptance with an undisclosed US medical device manufacturer. After six months of evaluation on a project, the manufacturer has purchased an undisclosed number of the iCure units to bond microelectronic components on a disposable medical device. The device is suitable for spot curing of thermal epoxies, for bonding and fixing plastic and glass components, for precision assembly and bonding of semiconductor components, and for localized heat welding of thermoplastics.

glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks.
