Crystal IS Inc.

BioPhotonics
Jan 2011
In Green Island, N.Y., ultraviolet LED developer Crystal IS Inc. announced that it has been awarded $5 million by DARPA. The grant is based on the performance of the company’s existing 265-nm LEDs, which leverage Crystal IS’ aluminum nitride substrate technology. The goal is to develop efficient LEDs operating below 275 nm for water sterilization and numerous other applications of interest to the US Department of Defense. Development of the LED will run in parallel with the recently announced effort to produce large-diameter aluminum nitride substrates.
