New Year, and New Head for SEMI India

Jan. 31, 2011 — Happy New Year and welcome back! It's been a little while since I blogged. The reason being, I shifted to a new house in the new year and was busy setting up things. Now that things are more or less on track, it is back to business!

First, please join me and let us all congratulate Debashish Chowdhury, who has just replaced Sathya Prasad as president of SEMI India.

This news is indeed incredible, given the fact that it is the first major news during the new year. In fact, it is the first major news that I have received in this year.

I also had a word with Sathya Prasad. He has endorsed this whole heartedly. That's great news!

Debashish was earlier editor of Global SMT India since 2007. From 2009 onward, I have been involved with him, off and on, on a variety of things, some of them being India's solar fortune, India's semicon future and so on and so forth. I was last involved with Debashish during electronica and productronica 2010 India, where I also produced the show dailies.

Little did I know that the future was so fickle! Or, well, so bright!! To be honest, I was in the know!

On a personal front, Debashish and I go back quite a long way. It was back in 2002, when I had returned from Singapore. I was hired by Exhibitions India as consulting Executive Editor. There, I had the good fortune to run into Debashish. I've used the term 'good fortune' as Debashish has turned out to be one person who has always stayed in touch, no matter where I have been.

India has several challenges to face. Just last December, the NTPC Vidyut Vyapaar Nigam (NVVN) handed out 37 licenses for solar PV under the National Solar Mission. Now, it has the challenge of seeing all of these projects successfully implemented. Next, it has to firm up new deals for the coming year (or years).

Debashish has just joined SEMI India and he has a long, long way to go! Let us congratulate him on the appointment and look forward to an even better year for solar PV in India.
