NASA Makes Optical Tech Available to Industry

GREENBELT, Md., Aug. 2, 2011 — NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is offering its advanced optical technologies for licensing and partnership opportunities.

Wavefront sensing and adaptive optics technology, procedures and lab equipment will be made available to private industry through NASA’s Innovative Partnerships Program Office’s “Can You See It Now?” campaign.

The technologies, which were developed for the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, could promote advances in microscopy, lasik and refractive eye surgery, biometric imaging, advanced cameras and sensors, and optical communications systems.

Besides the hardware and software solutions, NASA Goddard also offers components, design tools and engineers to firms seeking to actively develop adaptive optics systems.

Glossary
adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...
