Emcore Solar Cells to Power 4 Satellites

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Sept. 13, 2011 — Mitsubishi Electric Corp. of Tokyo has awarded Emcore Corp. a contract to manufacture, test and deliver high-efficiency solar cells for its TURKSAT 4A, TURKSAT 4B, Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 satellites.

Mitsubishi Electric currently is under contract with the TURKSAT AS to manufacture the TURKSAT 4A and 4B telecommunication satellites, to be based on its DS-2000 platform. In addition, Mitsubishi is building the Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 geostationary satellites for the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Production of solar cells will take place at Emcore’s Albuquerque facility.

Emcore provides compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the fiber optic, satellite, solar power and broadband markets.
