IRphotonics Lab Adds Thermal Imaging Capabilities

HAMDEN, Conn., Sept. 19, 2011 — Infrared fibers and systems manufacturer IRphotonics has acquired a high-resolution FLIR (forward-looking infrared) thermal imaging camera to expand the capabilities of its application engineering lab.

The camera will enable the company’s engineers to analyze the distribution of heat in the parts that are exposed to its iCure AS200, an inline fiber optic system that provides heat by infrared radiation in a portable unit. The system delivers pinpoint and accurate control for temperature-sensitive substrates and complex devices.

The goal is to optimize energy, wavelength and irradiance to meet particular process needs or to improve clients’ manufacturing productivity.

Glossary
forward-looking infrared
A night-vision device that uses one or more infrared transducers to scan a scene in the 3- to 5-µm or 8- to 12-µm spectral region, convert the infrared radiation to electronic data and present the resulting image on a televisionlike display. The term originally referred to airborne systems but now is used for any real-time thermal imaging system.
irradiance
Radiant flux incident per unit area of a surface. Also called radiant flux density.
