Piezo and nanopositioning products maker PI (Physik Instrumente) announced today that it has recently acquired a majority share in miCos GmbH of Eschbach, a micropositioning and motion control specialist. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PI, which is based in Karlsruhe, said the transaction expands its nano- and micropositioning portfolio with the addition of miCos' vacuum precision positioning applications and system integration capabilities. It especially expands PI's range of air-bearing technology and electromagnetic linear motor products. Also, high-load rotation stages and long-travel linear stages up to 1000 mm are now available, PI said.

PI-miCos will operate as a subsidiary of PI GmbH & Co. KG and will be managed by miCos founder Lucius Amelung, who will remain in charge.

"We expect even greater manufacturing flexibility in the future, since miCos GmbH has access to extensive precision machining equipment and has acquired substantial experience with precision manufacturing technologies," said Dr. Karl Spanner, PI managing director.

Glossary
nanopositioning
Nanopositioning refers to the precise and controlled movement or manipulation of objects or components at the nanometer scale. This technology enables the positioning of objects with extremely high accuracy and resolution, typically in the range of nanometers or even sub-nanometer levels. Nanopositioning systems are employed in various scientific, industrial, and research applications where ultra-precise positioning is required. Key features and aspects of nanopositioning include: Small...
