Corning Still Makes Calcium Fluoride In Lynn Savage’s article “Property Management: A Review of Optical Materials” (September 2011), Brandon Light of Optimax Systems Inc. was quoted as saying, “For example, New York-based Corning Inc. stopped producing calcium fluoride glass …” Although worldwide applications and wavelengths of interest have changed over the years, as has our product mix, Corning has neither discontinued manufacture of calcium fluoride crystal since its 1999 acquisition of Optovac Inc., nor are there any plans to exit this business. Quite to the contrary, we have been actively investing in our crystals programs and are enhancing our offerings through the development of an additional calcium fluoride grade aimed at improving lifetime in high-fluence laser optics applications.
