Edinburgh Instruments, Laser Quantum & Fianium

Sep 2012
Three photonics companies have received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the UK’s most coveted award for business success. Edinburgh Instruments of Livingston, a photonics and electro-optical scientific instrumentation manufacturer, received the honor for its sustained international growth. Laser Quantum of Cheshire was recognized for providing laser technology equipment and services to the aerospace, medicine, research and biomedical sectors. Fianium of Southampton received the award in the innovation category for its development of the WhiteLase supercontinuum fiber laser. The awards are made each year by the queen on the advice of the prime minister and an advisory committee.

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
