IPG Photonics acquires Mobius Photonics

IPG Photonics Corp. of Oxford, Mass., acquired privately held Mobius Photonics of Mountain View, Calif., to accelerate its entry into the UV laser market and to deepen IPG’s development team.

Mobius provides high-power pulsed fiber lasers and components for applications in scientific and industrial research, superresolution microscopy and imaging, and micromachining. In the transaction, IPG gained an exclusive license for an early and broad patent claiming pulsed fiber lasers with frequency conversion into UV light as well as other Mobius patents, licenses and trade secrets. Mobius employees will become part of the IPG Silicon Valley Technology Center. Mobius had revenue from operations of approximately $1.4 million for 2012.

Glossary
superresolution
Superresolution refers to the enhancement or improvement of the spatial resolution beyond the conventional limits imposed by the diffraction of light. In the context of imaging, it is a set of techniques and algorithms that aim to achieve higher resolution images than what is traditionally possible using standard imaging systems. In conventional optical microscopy, the resolution is limited by the diffraction of light, a phenomenon described by Ernst Abbe's diffraction limit. This limit sets a...
