QD Laser Wins IEEE Photonics Society Award

Quantum-dot laser developers Kenichi Nishi, Mitsuru Sugawara and Keizo Takemasa of QD Laser Inc. are the winners of this year’s Aron Kressel Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Photonics Society.

The team worked on temperature-insensitive quantum-dot lasers that have been commercialized and mass produced as light sources for optical communications systems.

The award will be presented at the IEEE Photonics Conference in San Diego Oct. 13.

Glossary
quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
