The Institute of Physics (IOP) has presented its Innovation Awards to two U.K. photonics companies.

M Squared Lasers Ltd. of Glasgow, Scotland, was recognized for development of a CW Ti:sapphire laser system used to explore quantum and materials science technology.

SolsTiS provides ultranarrow line width and low-noise output for cold-atom experiments. It is used in atomic clocks, teleportation demonstrations and antimatter experiments.

"By rethinking the underlying physics of the traditional laser and investing over 165 man-years into the development of a 'best-in-class' system, SolsTiS represents a complete step change in laser technology," said M Squared Lasers CEO and Founder Graeme Malcolm.

Silixa Ltd. of Elstree, England, was recognized for its development of distributed fiber optics used in acoustic sensing for seismic imaging and other applications.

The IOP also presented Innovation Awards to the makers of a veterinary MRI scanner, a magnetic detection system and a gamma-ray tomography platform for undersea pipeline inspection.
