SPI Ends Production of LPSSLs

SPI Lasers has stopped taking orders for lamp-pumped solid-state lasers (LPSSLs), citing a shrinking market for the devices.

The company's Rugby facility (formerly JK Lasers) began winding down production of LPSSLs in December 2013. SPI Lasers said alternative products, such as its own fiber lasers, offer better efficiency and lower operating costs for applications such as cutting, welding and fine drilling.

Existing LPSSL purchase orders will be fulfilled and supported by a seven-year spare parts, service and repair policy. Customers who wish to continue using LPSSLs will be transitioned to the TruPulse product line offered by SPI Lasers' parent company, Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG of Ditzingen, Germany.
