Write the manual for the future
The far-reaching applications and potential markets for optics and photonics put those technologies at the heart of the future and make it easy to become passionate about light and lasers and lenses and all the associated elements, devices and systems. It often follows that people with a passion for a subject have the desire to share their knowledge with a receptive audience.

This issue’s featured authors, Peter J. Kennedy and Rhonda L. Kennedy, relate how they wrote their book Stabilizing the Line of Sight to bridge the gaps they saw among available engineering curricula. They add, “It is based upon many years of design and development experience in this technical area with the hope that it will reduce the learning curve for new practitioners in the field.”

As Peter and Rhonda suggest, the decision to write a book often starts with a desire to share what has been learned over many years of studying and working with a particular science or technology. Many experts want to empower others to get right down to applying a technology to solve problems. For every devoted scientist and visionary engineer, there’s another person coming up who wants to learn from them.

Because you’re reading this, there is a good chance you’ve thought about the book you’d like to write. Perhaps it’s a book focused on a particular technology or application area. Or maybe you want to write a textbook to help train the next generation of optics and photonics devotees. Perhaps you have a gift for photonics product development, commercialization or marketing.

If you are an expert on some aspect of optics and photonics and their place in the future, we hope you’ll think about writing a book on the subject. We’ll help you find your audience.

The first step is to tell us about the book you want to write. We’ve made that job easier with our Book Proposal Form.

You’re the expert. Everyone else will need to read the manual—the manual only you can write.
