SPIE O+P Educates, Engages with Optical Sciences and Technology

SPIE Optics + Photonics, to be held Aug. 19-23 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif., is North America’s largest international, multidisciplinary optical sciences and technology meeting. Hosted by SPIE, the annual event highlights current research in optical engineering and applications, nanotechnology, and organic photonics.

Three symposia held during the meeting will offer attendees an in-depth look at specific research focuses and fields:

Optical Engineering + Applications: This conference focuses on research of the latest developments in optical design and engineering, including photonic devices and applications, x-ray, gamma-ray, and particle technologies, image and signal processing, optics and photonics for sustainable energy, remote sensing, and space optical systems.

Nanoscience + Engineering: This conference centers on the advancement of nanotechnology in fields such as energy, medicine, information storage, and computing. Researchers will focus on metamaterials, nanophotonic materials, plasmonics, quantum science and technology, nanomedicine, optical trapping, nanostructured thin films, spintronics, nanostructured devices, nanoengineering, nanoimaging, nanospectroscopy, and low-dimensional materials.

Organic Photonics + Electronics: This conference focuses on organic-based materials and devices that advance renewable energy sources, including OLEDs, OFETS, OHPVs, perovskite PVs, organic and hybrid sensors, bioelectronics, liquid crystals, and molecular machines.

Ten plenary sessions will be held throughout the conference, with speakers and presenters from around the world sharing the latest research and breakthroughs. Among them is Paul B. Corkum of the University of Ottawa (Canada) and National Research Council of Canada, a 2018 Winner of the SPIE Gold Medal Award, who will speak about Photon Management Through In Situ Photon Conversion with Optical Nanotransformers: Fundamentals to Emerging Technological Applications.

Also presenting will be Federico Capasso of the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University, discussing Metasurface Flat Optics: Unifying Semiconductor Manufacturing and Lens Making.

In the Nanoscience + Engineering plenary session, Mikael Käll of Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) will be presenting Plasmonic Nanostructures for Molecular Sensing and Actuation, Bumki Min of KAIST (Republic of Korea) will present Rapidly Time-Variant Metadevices for Linear Frequency Conversion, Natalia M. Litchinitser of University of Buffalo will speak about Structured Light on the Nanoscale, and Mathias Fink of Institut Langevin Ondes et Images (France) will discuss Wave Control with Time Materials.

During the Organic Photonics + Electronics plenary session, Sang Deog (Eddie) Yeo of LG Display (Republic of Korea) will present OLED, The Future Display is Here; Yueh-Lin (Lynn) Loo of Princeton University will speak about Making Smart Windows Smarter; and Timothy J. Bunning of the U.S. Air Force Research Lab will present Liquid Crystal Plus Polymer: Dynamic Thin Film Optical Elements. During the Remote Sensing plenary session, K. Dieter Klaes of EUMETSAT (Germany) will present Remote Sensing of Weather, Climate, and Environment.

Courses are also scheduled during SPIE O + P. Some of the featured courses being offered this year are Polarized Light and Optical Design, Imaging Spectrometry, Deep Learning, and Physiological Optics of the Eye for Engineers. Other courses and workshops being offered during the conference focus on topics such as advanced metrology, remote sensing, and optical system design.

In addition, a job fair and wide-ranging exhibition of 180 companies will be held, showcasing new products, innovations, and cutting-edge technology. Some of the featured technologies at the exhibition include test and measurement equipment, optical components, lenses, detectors, sensors, fiber optics, cameras and imaging systems, lasers, laser systems, chemicals, optical coatings, thin films, nanoprecision products, products for sustainable energy research, and LED and OLED technology. Companies and organizations attending the event include Agilent Technologies, Inc., Edmund Optics Inc., Hamamatsu Corp., II-VI Optical Systems, and NASA.
