CORNING, N.Y., Sept. 8 -- Corning Inc. will build its new $225 million photonic components manufacturing facility on a 56-acre site in Nashua, N.H. Corning's latest endeavor is a continuation of its $270 million investment plan, announced last April, to increase the manufacturing capacity of Corning Lasertron by six. Corning Lasertron produces active components used in communication networks such as pump lasers, transmission lasers and receivers.
Construction on the New Hampshire plant will begin in November, and production is scheduled to start by the summer of 2001. The new plant will staff 850 employees when it becomes fully operational in 2002, Corning said.
We are succeeding in our efforts to broaden our manufacturing capability from wafer fabrication through packaging, said Bob Brown, president of Corning Lasertron. Corning is aggressively working to meet current and future demand for pumps and transmission lasers. Our expansion plan is on track and is consistent with Corning's strategy of being a leading optical layer company.
