Raytheon Co. of Lexington, Mass., has pledged $1.2 million to the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Sensors at Northeastern University in Boston.

The money will help to fund curriculum development on basic engineering principles and technology development. Program elements will include internships, laboratories, interdisciplinary courses and design competitions.

The National Science Foundation established the center last year to unite researchers from Northeastern, Boston University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, and four affiliates, Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, both in Boston, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.
