Applied Biosystems Informatics Software Chosen for Bioinformatics Center

FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 25 -- Applied Biosystems Group, an Applera Corporation business, and Wayne State University (WSU) announced today that Applied Biosystems has been chosen as the foundation software provider for the bioinformatics center being developed at the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor and WSU. The Applied Biosystems Rapid Integration Solution (RIS) program provides sophisticated software and services to create solutions tailored to customer needs. Both institutions will use the RIS program to automate, integrate, and manage data generation from laboratories conducting genetic sequencing, high-throughput gene-expression studies, high-throughput genotyping and other research applications.
    "The Applied Biosystems RIS program will be key to managing, analyzing and publishing the enormous amounts of data produced from the genomics and proteomics projects already in progress at the university," said David Womble, director of bioinformatics at WSU's Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. "The databases implemented by the RIS team will also be invaluable for sharing this information with colleagues at WSU and at the other institutions participating in the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor."
    "Academic research is very effective at creating new knowledge, but less effective at sharing that knowledge efficiently," explains Mark Hughes, M.D., a professor at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics and coordinator of WSU's involvement in the Corridor. "Applied Biosystems software will link university laboratories and allow them to collaborate and share data more easily."
