SAN DIEGO, March 28 -- Cubic Defense Applications, a segment of Cubic Corp., has received a $12 million contract to provide its MILES 2000 laser-based combat training system to US Army troops at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Tec-Masters Inc. (TMI) awarded Cubic the contract through the Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. Under the contract, Cubic will provide thousands of MILES 2000 components for weapons such as M16 rifles, M24 sniper rifles, M2 heavy machine guns and new Stryker vehicles. The Cubic-engineered "multiple integrated laser engagement system" consists of laser transmitters that are mounted on actual weapons, detectors that determine whether a player has been "hit, missed or killed," and data transfer devices that download exercise data into computers for post-mission analysis. Since 1998, Cubic has supplied more than 40,000 MILES 2000 systems to US and allied forces, including the British Armed Forces, Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, Kuwait Land Forces and Brazilian Army. It has also been used at numerous US military bases; in Alaska, MILES 2000 has also been incorporated into "Cope Thunder" Northern Edge combat training, an intense two-week exercise for aircrews and ground forces. The Fort Richardson MILES 2000 components will be compatible with the Army's new Alaska mobile units (AMUs) that are in development at the Alaska Training Range. The AMUs, also provided by Cubic and TMI, feature live simulation and real-time tracking capabilities made possible with the use of GPS-based player units and Cubic's PC-based range instrumentation system.
