Grating Enables Tunable Fiber Laser for Telecom

Breck Hitz

Today's fiber optic telecom systems use a different fixed-frequency semiconductor laser to transmit each channel into the optical fiber. If these individual lasers were tunable -- that is, capable of switching from one wavelength channel to another -- it would add great flexibility to the network. Even better, if a single laser were capable of generating all the channels simultaneously, it would not only add flexibility, but also simplify the network design. For these reasons, researchers worldwide are investigating techniques to tune lasers and to build devices capable of simultaneous...Read full article

    diffraction grating
A diffraction grating is an optical component consisting of a surface with a periodic structure of equally spaced, parallel grooves or rulings. These rulings act as an array of closely spaced slits or reflective elements that cause incoming light to diffract or spread out into its component wavelengths. diffraction grating suppliers → When monochromatic light (light of a single wavelength) illuminates a diffraction grating, the grooves cause the light to interfere constructively...
    erbium-doped fiber amplifier
An optical fiber that can be used to amplify an optical input. Erbium rare earth ions are added to the fiber core material as a dopant in typical levels of a few hundred parts per million. The fiber is highly transparent at the erbium lasing wavelength of two to nine microns. When pumped by a laser diode, optical gain is created, and amplification occurs.
    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
