Eric ZarakovWhen an application demands high-quality color imaging, CCD sensors once were the only alternative, but this is no longer the case for certain applications. Foveon Inc. in Santa Clara, Calif., believes that the key to boosting color imaging capability is with a direct image sensor architecture, called X3, that can capture three colors at each pixel location. The sensor structure stacks three pixel sensors, or photodetectors, within a pixel location, each dedicated to capturing a different color -- red, green or blue. This produces a full-color image without using a color mosaic filter. ...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesModified Photodiode Enables Multifunctional, High-Performance PICsThin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) shows strong potential as a platform for integrated photonics, due to its robust electro-optic coefficient, large optical nonlinearity, and wide transparency window....Photonics Spectra January 2024 IssueNanowire Single-photon Detector Lets Machines See Through WallsUsing a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) as the light-sensing element, researchers from Tianjin University demonstrated non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging at two infrared (IR)...Photonics Spectra February 2024 IssueOrganic Optoelectronics Device Supports IoT in Low-Power EnvironmentsOrganic-based optoelectronics have the potential to provide an energy-efficient way to operate low-power indoor devices and wireless IoT sensors.
