HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 5 -- Researchers have developed an improved method for performing sentinel lymph node biopsy, a crucial first step in determining whether a cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The new method depends on quantum dots, nanometer-sized crystals that emit near-infrared (NIR) light, to illuminate lymph nodes during cancer surgery. The research, resulting from collaboration between researchers at MIT, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital, will be published in the January issue of Nature Biotechnology. The new NIR quantum dots were...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticles4D Printing Scheme Enables Light-Controlled Soft RoboticsThe process of 4D printing is an extension of 3D printing, in which solid objects are created using materials that can change shape when exposed to certain stimuli like heat, water, or light. ...Photonics Spectra April 2024 IssueNASA to Test Deep-Space Laser Communication on Psyche MissionNASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications project will test the use of near-infrared lasers as potential replacements for the current radio frequency systems.
