CORNING, N.Y., April 13 --Corning Inc. announced today the delivery of a 1.8-meter ULE (ultralow expansion) mirror blank to the Pan-STARRS project being coordinated by the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy (IFA). The IFA is leading the effort to design and implement an astronomical survey system to search for potential earth-impacting asteroids and comets. The US Air Force Research Laboratory provides funding for this project. The mirror blank will be the primary mirror for the Pan-STARRS PS-1 telescope. The PS-1 telescope will function as the pathfinder for the primary telescope...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesFiber Technology Invented in 1970s Enters Quantum AgeFollowing its development by a team at Corning in 1970, low-loss optical fiber became the best means to efficiently transport information from one place to another over long distances without loss of...Photonics Spectra February 2023 IssueWhite House Adds Corning CEO to Advisory Committee: People in the News: 03/15/23Corning CEO Wendell Weeks has been named to the U.S. Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, a committee established to provide policy advice to the U.S. trade representative.
