Purdue Researchers Use Mass Spectrometry to Detect Explosives Inside Luggage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Oct. 5 -- Fast, highly reliable detection of residues that could indicate the presence of explosives and other hazardous materials inside luggage is now possible with technology under development at Purdue University. A research team led by R. Graham Cooks has found a way to determine the presence on a surface of trace quantities of chemicals -- such as those found in biological and chemical warfare agents, as well as several common explosives -- within a few seconds.      Purdue Chemist R. Graham Cooks, at left, works with student Nathan Sanders on a mass spectrometer...Read full article

    Glossary
    mass spectrometry
An instrumental technique that utilizes the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles as recorded from a mass spectrometer in order to determine the mass of a particle as well as the chemical makeup, or elemental ionic composition of a given sample or molecule.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
