Schneider Lenses Used in NASA Shuttle

NASA has selected Schneider lenses for two space shuttle flight safety systems as part of its Shuttle Return to Flight program. It will use a Xenoplan f/2.8, 50-mm compact C-mount lens from Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH of Bad Kreuznach, Germany, on the shuttle’s orbital inspection boom. The inspection system incorporates cameras and a laser ranging system for scanning the orbiter’s exterior for damage while in flight, enabling astronauts to repair it before re-entry into the atmosphere.
