The Naval Research Laboratory in Washington has been synthesizing diamonds since the mid-1980s, hoping to use them as thermal, optical and electrical semiconducting materials for a variety of US Department of Defense applications. Because high quality is essential, the researchers also have been studying the impurities of natural diamonds to determine the significance of the defects seen in synthetic ones.
