'Fantastic Voyage' to Approach Sci-Fi Realm

LEICESTER, England, July 7, 2006 -- A three-nation consortium is planning a "fantastic voyage" to explore empty space -- with potential benefits that have previously been explored only in science fiction. The program, Nanocase, will use the ultrahigh vacuum atomic force microscope at the University of Leicester Physics and Astronomy Department to make very high-precision Casimir force measurements in nonsimple cavities and to assess the utility of the force in providing a method for contactless transmission in nanomachines. The project, which will be lead by the University of Leicester, aims to delve into a "void" -- an...Read full article

The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    casimir force
The Casimir force is a quantum phenomenon that results in an attractive force between two closely spaced uncharged conductive surfaces. This force arises from the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field between the surfaces. The Casimir effect was first predicted by Dutch physicist Hendrik Casimir in 1948 and has since been experimentally observed, providing a remarkable confirmation of quantum field theory. Key points about the Casimir force: Quantum vacuum fluctuations:...
