Hybrid Microscope Combines Optics, Ultrafast Laser

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 27, 2006 -- A new hybrid device that combines an optical microscope with an ultrafast laser could be used to simultaneously image both the electronic and physical patterns in devices such as nanotransistors or to identify the chemicals or elements that comprise them. The new form of microscopy, called scanning photoionization microscopy (SPIM), can reveal the physical and electronic profiles of metal nanostructures.     An instrument consisting essentially of a tube 160 mm long, with an objective lens at the distant end and an eyepiece at the near end. The objective forms a real aerial image of the object in the focal plane of the eyepiece where it is observed by the eye.
