Albis Optoelectronics Develops Hermetic Photodiode

Zurich, Switzerland-based Albis Optoelectronics AG, a manufacturer of photodiodes for analog and digital applications, announced this week that it has developed a new technology that protects biased photodiodes in hot and humid environments. The technology enables bare die photodiodes to operate for more than 1000 hours in an 85 °C, 85 percent relative-humidity environment. Company officials said hermetic photodiodes reduce packaging costs and allow non-hermetic modules to pass Telcordia GR-468 requirements. The technology is especially beneficial for PLC-based di- and triplexers, officials...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photodiode
A two-electrode, radiation-sensitive junction formed in a semiconductor material in which the reverse current varies with illumination. Photodiodes are used for the detection of optical power and for the conversion of optical power to electrical power. See avalanche photodiode; PIN photodiode.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
