Photonic Laser Thruster Makes Its Debut

TUSTIN, Calif., Feb. 22, 2007 -- Einstein's vision of laser-powered rockets whizzing through space may not be realized in the near future, but the idea of humans traveling the cosmos at "warp" speeds came a step closer to reality in December when Young Bae of the Bae Institute successfully demonstrated the first photonic laser thruster (PLT). The photonic laser thruster, created by the Bae Institute in California, overcomes the inefficiency of photon particles producing thrust by bouncing them many times between two mirrors. "I attended Dr. Bae's presentation about his PLT demonstration and measurement of photon thrust here...Read full article

    Glossary
    photon
A quantum of electromagnetic energy of a single mode; i.e., a single wavelength, direction and polarization. As a unit of energy, each photon equals hn, h being Planck's constant and n, the frequency of the propagating electromagnetic wave. The momentum of the photon in the direction of propagation is hn/c, c being the speed of light.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
