'Electronic Gridlock' Blocks Cuprates Superconductors

ITHACA, N.Y., March 5, 2007 -- Superconductivity, the conduction of electricity with zero resistance, can sometimes seem to be stalled by a form of electronic "gridlock." A possible explanation is offered by new research at Cornell University. The research, reported today at the American Physical Society (APS) annual meeting in Denver, concerns certain copper oxides -- known as cuprates -- that can become high-temperature superconductors, but can also, in a slightly different configuration, become stalled by the "gridlock."
